Artists Talk: Tell Me a Story

“Tell Me a Story” features the work of Portland, Oregon artists Jeff Leake and David Carmack Lewis, whose intriguing approaches to their paintings enhance the aspect of narrative in their work.
Jeff Leake explores the intersection of culture and nature in his work, incorporating landscapes, stories, and real events. Leake says of his work: “My paintings often depict landscapes, a combination of real and imagined places, and the stories associated with them, in a style that combines elements of Bruegel, Bosch, alongside the popular history illustrations from my childhood.”
David Carmack Lewis depicts real locales that he has seen in daytime and imagines these places at night, with unexpected elements added. He describes his paintings in this way: “Here are some stories for you: stories about trees, stories about old houses and overpasses and forests and mountains and deserts and lonely places in the dark when no one else is around.”
