About this Event
Artists' Agency: Useful Stuff for Artists
A Deep Dive into Artificial Intelligence for Artists
Dr Andrew Dow & David Clark
We are already seeing AI changing how bigger organisations work, but we also know that there are both unique challenges and exciting possibilities presented by AI for small creative businesses and individual artists and their practices.
This workshop is about exploring how artists and creatives of all disciplines are using AI (or why they aren’t), finding out what barriers there might be, and seeing what it could do to help. It will give people time and space to ask questions, unpack concerns, share practice and get hands-on experience exploring using AI with support.
The day will be guided by David Clark and Dr. Andrew Dow, researchers in Human-Computer Interaction from Northumbria University, who are interested in how AI is shaping creative work and communities.
This workshop is part of the Artists' Agency programme and is a CPD opportunity, as well as a key part of a research project exploring AI in creative practice and use by small creative businesses and individuals.
As AI becomes increasingly prevalent, understanding how it is being used is essential to ensuring its safe, responsible, and effective integration. This research aims to capture real-world experiences, identify challenges and opportunities, and facilitate informed discussions on AI’s role. The insights gained will help shape a broader understanding of AI use in this context, supporting best practices for artists and creatives. Participants will receive full details about the research in advance, including its purpose and how data will be collected. You can choose to participate in the workshop without taking part in the research if you wish. For more information or if you have any research-related questions, feel free to get in touch with David Clark ([email protected])
What to expect:
- Open, supported discussions of many aspects of AI from its applications and possibilities to the ethical challenges presented.
- Time, resources and support to explore using AI both creatively and for admin. No prior experience needed.
- Free lunch!
For those who’ve never used AI, this is a chance to explore it in a supportive setting—it might be useful, or it might just be something to try and leave behind! For those already using AI, it’s an opportunity to experiment, share experiences, and reflect on best practices. Plus, you’ll be contributing to new research that looks at how AI is (and isn’t) being used in creative work, helping shape understanding and future support.
