About the Project:
Are invisible frequencies part of your identity; your essence? Come decide for yourself as your digital data is rendered through a complex array of antennas and signal processors into the analog world of light and sound, generating cymatic patterns and soundscapes that mimic the complexity of the social ecosystems that these invisible frequencies secretly inhabit.
'INVISIBLE x FREQUENCIES x IDENTITIES' by North End Cymatic Society will take place from 6PM-midnight on Saturday, October 19th at The FAB (Former Art Bar) for Nocturne.

About the Artists:
At the crossroads of art and science lives the friendship of Woochang Kim and John Janigan-Mills. Together they explore the existential realities of “current year” ™ and the far corners of their psyches’ by creating Rube Goldberg-esque contraptions intended to portray reality in distorted but illuminating ways. By interpreting the sum of both natural and artificial worlds through their individual expression, they aim to map out previously unknown links from one part of the artistic stratosphere to another.

John Janigan-Mills is a multifaceted human residing in K’jipuktuk (Halifax, NS) engaging in music, sound, art, technology, and the innumerable permutations thereof. Inspired by diverse minds like Herbie Hancock, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Alan Turing, and Rube Goldberg, he is an inventor and participant of artistic apparatuses that explore questions about the nature of self and our place in both analog and digital worlds.
He double majored in Jazz Composition and Electronic Music Production & Design at Berklee College of Music (Boston, MA), followed by a stint of Computer & Electronics Engineering at Dalhousie University (Halifax, NS) and has since strived to merge the two worlds into one cohesive, expansive collage. He has worked as a sound recordist, sound designer, and foley artist for films and video games, recorded and produced everything from singer-songwriters to metal bands to symphony orchestras, created original software and circuits that blur the boundaries of various forms of media, and has performed a wide assortment of rhythm instruments across a staggering variety of groups and genres in a kaleidoscopic range of venues from dingy DIY punk venues to bustling corporate arenas.

Woochang Kim was born and raised in South Korea, immigrating to K'jipuktuk (Halifax, NS) in 2007. In 2011, he began his studies at NSCAD, initially focusing on visual arts, but soon realized that his true path lay in interdisciplinary art. He immersed himself in various three-dimensional disciplines, including electronics, ceramics, metal smithing, sculpture, and textiles. By the end of his studies, he was captivated by visionary expressions that combined kinetic functionality, drawing inspiration from both human-made objects and nature. His work is influenced by Dadaism, slow fashion, and the upcycling and downcycling of materials.
Over the past five years, Woochang has been working in ocean technologies, expanding his expertise in sonar and underwater acoustics, with cymatics being his latest focus of interest. He still consistently works towards materials and their sources, questioning resources and residues from this capitalistic material society world. He focuses on reusing, rebuilding and recycling. He seeks to breathe new life into found discarded materials by appreciating their function and material, and giving out new insight of possibilities and beyond their original purposes.
