Join Indigenous artist Renee Castro for an intimate artist talk exploring the relationships between land, memory, material culture, and responsibility. Castro’s work reflects her Lisjan Ohlone and Bay Miwok connections to place, drawing from painting, printmaking, beadwork, natural materials, and conservation practices to consider how Indigenous knowledge continues to live through making.

In this talk, Castro will discuss her evolving studio practice, including new paintings on display, and the ways her work engages themes of cultural continuity, fire stewardship, environmental change, and urban Indigenous identity. She will share how research, community work, and hands-on material processes shape her approach to art, as well as how her experiences in museum conservation have deepened her thinking about care, repair, and the responsibilities artists and institutions hold toward cultural materials.

Rather than presenting artworks as fixed or finished, this conversation invites audiences into the process of making: the questions, histories, materials, and relationships that guide the work before it is complete.
