Join us for an evening of photography, artistic research, and conversations about memory, time, place, and the ways visual practice can help us make sense of the world around us, with two photographers and artists visiting Riga this October. Gundega Strauberga and Joseph Kennel will share their artistic practices, ideas, and ongoing projects.
Gundega Strauberga is a Latvian image artist based in the Netherlands. Her recent practice explores the blurring of public and private domains through the circulation and recirculation of images. In her talk, Gundega will reflect on growing up in Ziepniekkalns, one of Riga’s “sleeping districts”, the delicate boundary between memory and imagination, and photography’s complex relationship with truth. Can photography bring us closer to the truth – or lead us away from it?
Joseph Kennel is an artistic researcher and photographer whose practice explores how materials and spaces can reveal deep histories and hidden layers of meaning. In his talk, Joseph will discuss photography as a tool for questioning our relationship with time. He will also present Paleosol, an ongoing project he began in Latvia in 2025, which explores stone sites as spaces where scientific knowledge and folklore intersect.
Both artists are graduates of the Master’s programme in Photography and Society at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and are currently based in the Netherlands.
🎟️ Free entry – everyone is welcome!
Joseph Kennel’s residency in Latvia is supported by the Culture Moves Europe program.
Gundega Strauberga’s participation is co-funded by the IN-SITU project in collaboration with Utopias Lahti
