Join us for a talk by artist Cindy Bernard presented alongside the museum’s . Bernard will discuss her series Ask the Dust (1988–92) and the broader body of work it belongs to, which investigated the intersections of cinema, landscape, and memory. The talk will be followed by a brief segment devoted to audience questions.

Biography

Cindy Bernard is a post-conceptual artist and activist whose work resides in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Centre Pompidou, Paris; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, among others. She has produced solo projects for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. She has received grants, fellowships, and residencies from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, MacDowell, Ucross Foundation, Creative Capital, Cali Catalyst, and Anonymous Was a Woman. Until 2019 she lived in Los Angeles, where for twenty years she founded and directed the Society for the Activation of Social Space through Art and Sound (SASSAS). She is now part of the third generation of her family to reside in Twentynine Palms, California, where she maintains her studio and encourages local civic engagement and government accountability as editor in chief, cofounder, and writer for Desert Trumpet, an independent nonprofit local news publication covering the Morongo Basin.
