ARTIST BIO
Michael Snodgrass is a Santa Fe-based artist whose work is often described as Abstract Primitive, with influences from the Neo-Expressionist movement of 1980s New York. He spent his childhood between Napa Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area before moving to San Francisco shortly after high school.
As a teenager, Snodgrass talked his way into a position as an assistant to artist Irwin Friedman, where he painted backgrounds for Friedman’s San Francisco street scenes. Within a year, he began producing and selling his own cityscapes, distributing hundreds of paintings through wholesale decorators. This early professional experience allowed him to develop strong technical skills in paint handling, color, and composition.
Snodgrass stepped away from fine art for more than three decades, working as a cabinet maker, builder, and furniture designer while raising a family. In the mid-1990s, a move to Santa Fe, New Mexico marked his return to the art world, initially as a sculptor. There, he created animal sculptures from found materials such as reclaimed wood and scrap metal and developed a deep appreciation for tribal, Pre-Columbian, and Mexican folk art.
In 2000, he relocated to California’s Monterey Peninsula, where he resumed painting and developed a large following of collectors across the US and internationally. Since then, he has built a body of work distinguished by bold color, heavily layered paint and wax, and carved, primitive figures that often incorporate humor and social commentary. He returned to Santa Fe, NM in recent years, where he maintains an active studio practice.
