Ancient Art First Saturdays of the month are for art fun! Stop by for FREE gallery activities, special presentations, and creative exploration designed for all ages. This month, get to know our ancient art collection, with works dating from as far back as the 5th millennium BCE. You’ll see pottery, clay tablets, marble and stone carvings, glassware, jewelry, and much more.
A look at the fun this month from 11 am–2 pm:
• Begin at our Welcome Table in the Hawks Pavilion! Pick up a program and map for the day. We can let you know about membership opportunities, upcoming programs, our Bloomberg Connects digital guide, and Art Card self-guide resources. We also can help with any accessibility needs.
• Storytime with Omaha Public Library, 11 am; get comfortable in our new Community Room for this storytime program. There also will be opportunities to learn more about all the great things happening at area libraries.
• Artist demonstration with Omaha-based artist Pamela Conyers-Hinson using traditional carving tools, inspired by the stone and marble carvings on view in the ancient art galleries.
• Join us for Meet an Archaeologist sessions with Erin Walcek Averett, professor of Art History and Archaeology and Classical & Near Eastern Civilizations at Creighton University. She will be joined by Charlee Sharack, an Art History major with a focus in Classical Art at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln who has worked on excavations in Türkiye and Nebraska; Kelly Zach, an alumnus of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln who has worked on excavations in Türkiye and Italy and will be pursuing a graduate degree in Classical Archaeology this fall; and Annabel Averett, a junior at Millard North High School who participates in excavations in Cyprus and studies Latin, with plans to continue studying archaeology in college.
• Visit Studio 1 to create a work of art inspired by work in the collection. All ages are welcome.
• Check out our Art Cart station, with opportunities to touch hands-on materials and talk about art with our friendly Gallery Volunteers.
• Drop-In Sketching! We have all the materials you need for sketching—a great way to slow down and look carefully at what you see.
• Due to the generous support of Art Bridges Foundation’s Access for All program, All Aboard is free to all this day; always free for Joslyn members.
• The Founder’s Room is designated as a quiet space for this event, stocked with an array of books and games.
• Don’t forget to check out more great spaces—The Cafe offers food and drink for sale. The Shop has beautiful art items for all ages and interests. If you are part of an intergenerational group, be sure to visit Art Works: A Place for Curiosity, an interactive space with nine different art activity stations (children must be accompanied by adults).
Generous support provided by Art Bridges Foundation’s Access for All program.
Thanks to program partners Omaha Public Library and Creighton University.
