About this Event
“The fault lies not in our stars… but in our institutions and our education.”
Join us for our next 1838 Collective reading group, where we’ll be discussing Linda Nochlin’s landmark essay Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?
In this influential text, Nochlin challenges the idea that women simply failed to produce “great” artists. Instead, she examines how institutional barriers, education, and social structures have historically limited access, opportunity, and recognition.
This session is an opportunity to:
Engage with key ideas in feminist art theory
Reflect on how institutions shape artistic careers
Share perspectives and experiences in a relaxed, supportive group setting
Connect with other artists and thinkers
BYOB — feel free to bring your own drinks to our studio.
This reading group is aimed at emerging and graduate artists, but all are welcome.
📖 A PDF of the text will be emailed to you after booking.
🎟️ Free ticket required to keep the group small and welcoming. Donations are very welcome and help support our ongoing, artist-led events.
We look forward to reading and discussing together.
Meet us in our studios at Islington Mill on the courtyard!
