Join us for a guided walk and learn about canalside plants followed by a workshop on creative approaches to anthotype printmaking.
About this Event

This session will consist of a guided walk along a section of the Grand Union Canal focusing on the kinds of plants that can be found in the area, and a workshop on making anthotype prints from plants. In the session we will cover:

  • Identifying canalside plants, their folklore and traditional uses
  • How to extract a photosensitive dye from plants
  • How to prep the paper for the printing
  • How to lay out your plants for a successful print

For those who attended a previous session we will also build on your experience by incorporating abstract shapes into your compositions and experiementing with using different colours in your design.

Anthotype print making is a form of cameraless photography where an image is created using the photosensitive properties of plant dyes. These prints must be left out in the sun for several days, or even weeks, for the image to develop. As such, you won't finish the session with a finished print: the session will cover making the plant dye and prepping the paper. The paper we prepare with this dye will then be used to make a print that will be featured in a public art display called Canalside Flora. You will be invited to the opening of this display and the results of the prints will be emailed to you.

The workshop will take place on board our floating Classroom JENA.
