The life and artwork of iconic Springfield poet and artist will be explored. We will also look at his visionary ideas for Springfield. We are asking any followers of Vachel Lindsay's work to bring your memorabilia and share with the audience.
The following events will take place after the Art History Happy Hour and will also focus on Vachel Lindsay.
Friday, August 22: A Follow-up activity for fans of Vachel Lindsay is a visit to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library (212 N 6th St, Northeast corner of 6th and Jefferson) on August 22. There you will have the very rare opportunity to see their collection of Vachel’s artwork all at once between 9:30 a.m - 11:30 a.m.
Additionally, the Vachel Lindsey home (603 S. 5th St.) will be open for tours between 9:30 AM - 11:30 AM. All patrons who attend will receive a copy of "The Little Turtle" illustrated by George Colin, and will also be entered to win a poetry/prose book by Vachel Lindsay.
Saturday, August 23, 7 - 9 PM: The Golden Seed
The Liturgical Arts Festival’s 2025 program will be a dramatic performance with musical interludes. The theatrical component, from writer and director James Compton Bockmier, is an in-character “trialogue” between Susan Lawrence Dana (Arlene Cooney), Frank Lloyd Wright (Patrick Foster) and Vachel Lindsay (Keegan Otwell) discussing the intersection of art and spirituality in their lives and work. Small group ensembles from Springfield Choral Society in turn will present musical selections interspersed throughout the dramatic action.
