In this acclaimed retelling of Greek mythology, Circe—daughter of Helios, the god of the sun—grows up an unlikely goddess. When she discovers her gift for witchcraft, Zeus banishes her to a remote island, where she hones her powers and encounters legendary figures, including the Minotaur and Odysseus. Miller’s novel explores themes of magic, exile, identity, and love, offering a bold feminist perspective on ancient myth.
Together, the novel and exhibition invite readers to consider how ancient beliefs in magic shaped myth, storytelling, and cultural imagination. As part of this program, participants are also invited to join New York Times bestselling author Madeline Miller for a virtual talk and reading from Circe on May 30.
Art Book Club events are free and open to the public, but registration is required. You can register online at toledomuseum.org/events or by calling (419) 255-8000. Light refreshments will be provided.
