About this Event

Free + Open to the Public!

Join us in showing up for the kids and classrooms in our community.

At Casa de Cultura, we celebrate the cultures, stories, and people that make a community feel like home. In so many of our communities, that home is built by teachers who give everything they have, often out of their own pockets.

The Gulfton neighborhood is where Violeta’s mother calls home, one of Houston's most underrepresented areas. Families from across Latin America have built their lives there. It is the kind of place where neighbors look out for one another. This neighborhood has experienced uncertainty and disruption that have shaped the lives of many residents. It is a reminder of how much the children of this community deserve stability, support, and people who show up for them. This drive is one way of doing exactly that.

The neighborhood surrounding Liberty High School is home to families who are hardworking people raising kids with big dreams. We want to make sure those kids walk into the classroom ready.

What to expect:

  • Drop off school supplies at event check-in for us to donate to teachers and students at Liberty High School. All donated supplies will go directly to the teachers and students who need them most.
  • Come explore the Luz y Sombra exhibition before it comes down to make way for the next show, Con Sangre y Corazón: Portrait of Our Community.
  • Create with our Art À La Carte self-serve arts & crafts station- make a mini zine, try your hand at collage, decorate your own picture frame and more! Not feeling crafty? Take a seat in our cozy reading nook and read and book or even invite a friend to play some board games-we'll have activities for all ages!
  • Become part of the art: Leave a handwritten reflection note directly on the gallery walls as part of a growing living archive
  • Stop by the photo booth to create a selfie portrait!
  • Experience the community-built archive installation bringing together friends’ personal objects, photographs, sounds, and living materials that explore memory and identity.

This event pairs the joy of making and discovering local art with a simple act of giving. We hope to see you here!

About Casa de Cultura

Casa de Cultura is Violeta Alvarez's Space Taking Artist Residency, a deeply personal project exploring cultural identity, heritage, and memory. Inspired by her mother's journey from Mexico to the United States, the project honors the strength, sacrifices, and ancestral roots of communities native to Mesoamerica. Through personal visual stories and community participation, the residency shapes an archive where reflection, connection, and visibility take root in response to narratives that have tried to erase and diminish presence.

Casa de Cultura is a project as part of the Space Taking Artist Residency program, powered by Fresh Arts, running July through August 2026.
