Arresting Visions in Late-Stage Capitalism

If we see drawing as a distinctive activity from painting or other forms of image making we can isolate it is as both a crude act of inscription and designation, and or, a full articulation of narrative or personal truth. The currency of drawing, like that of painting, lies in the limitations of the artist or maker and our understanding of the depicted is suspended in our understanding of visual language, stylism and the myriad intentions of the artist. Today, as we are swamped with visual media, drawing provides a unique and human lens on critical issues of the day. This talk with explore the unique affordances of drawing as a media and consider drawings by the author artist of the migrant crisis in Calais and how they might provide a new understanding of the human tragedy unfolding daily.

Dr. Louis Netter - is an artist and academic with over 25 years of experience teaching in the US, UK and in France. His research explores contemporary reportage drawing, comics-as-research, arts based methods in global health, animation and narratives about children experiencing the worst forms of labour in illustrated literature. His illustrations have been published in major newspapers and magazines and he has published 2 graphic novels. His animations have won several international awards including Honourable Mention at the 2024 British Association of Film, Television and Screen Studies Awards. His artwork is collected in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Library of Congres amongst many other collections in the US. His book Reportage Drawing: Vision and Experience (Bloomsbury) is the first book to put a theoretical lens on Reportage drawing.
