Theater educators and performers and have compiled an invaluable guide for students, storytellers and solo practitioners alike. (Northwestern University Press) is for anyone ready to bring their story to life, in the Chicago live lit storytelling scene, the theatre or writing class. will join Arlene and Julie, who will sign books following the discussion. This event has two ticket options: 1) free or 2) includes a copy of the book at a 10% discount.

Getting here: We are located at 1620 Orrington Avenue, in downtown Evanston, just one block east of the Davis Street Metra and CTA public transit stops. There is metered street parking as well as numerous parking garages nearby.

About the book: : The Everything Guide to Writing, Performing, and Producing Your One-Person Show (Northwestern University Press) is for anyone ready to bring their story to life, in the Chicago live lit storytelling scene, the theatre or writing class. Theater educators and performers and have compiled an invaluable guide for students, storytellers and solo practitioners alike. Topics include high-stakes narratives, compelling characters, and the role of narrators, as well as practical exercises, interviews with Chicago storytellers and solo artists at every stage of their careers, and examples from real one-person shows. Performers will also find advice on collaborating with directors, incorporating technical elements, and producing and marketing strategies.

About Julie: is a multi-disciplinary artist and educator. As a professional actor, she has appeared on Chicago stages large and small for over 30 years. Julie has written and performed four original solo plays, the latest of which, Michiganderish, will be performed in South Haven, Michigan and in Steppenwolf's “Lookout” series this August. She is also a long-time teaching artist for the Goodman Theatre's “GeNarrations” program and an adjunct professor at The Theatre School at DePaul University. (AEA/SAG-AFTRA)

About Arlene: is an award-winning playwright, actor, and teaching artist whose solo work has toured nationally and internationally. She is the Director of Education at Chicago Dramatists, where she teaches solo. She also runs The Writers Room, offering classes, coaching and a creative home for writers at all stages. She is, to her knowledge, the only actor to have appeared in both Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure and Doogie Howser, M.D. within the same twenty-four hours. Arlenemalinowski.com

About Michele: is the author of seven award-winning nonfiction books, including the most recent, The Time We Have: Essays on Pandemic Living. Weldon's frequent commentary on gender, media, diversity, pop culture and women’s issues appear in The New York Times, NBC, USA Today, Forbes, Time, CNN, Newsweek, Washington Post, Slate, Chicago Tribune, Guardian and many more. She is emerita faculty in journalism at Northwestern University where she taught for 18 years and a senior leader with “The OpEd Project,” where she has led fellowships and programs mentoring thousands of thought leaders across the U.S. and globally since 2011. She is the mother of three grown sons and an amateur artist.
