As part of its ongoing America’s 250th celebration series, Fort Smith Museum of History will host the traveling exhibit Arkansaw, Arkansas: A State and Its Reputation, opening on Tuesday, June 2nd. The exhibit will remain on display for the month of June 2026, and will close Thursday, June 30th.
Developed by Old State House Museum as part of the Arkansas Heritage traveling exhibit program, the exhibit is inspired by Arkansas/Arkansaw: A State and Its Reputation, the acclaimed exhibit and book by Brooks Blevins. It examines the myths and realities that gave rise to Arkansas’s long-standing image as a remote, rugged, and often misunderstood place. Through humor, literature, music, tourism, and media portrayals, the exhibit explores how generations of Americans came to associate Arkansas with hillbillies, moonshiners, bears, backwoods folklore, and frontier life.
From the legendary tale of “The Arkansas Traveler” and the colorful storytelling tradition of “The Big Bear of Arkansas” to later pop culture phenomena such as The Beverly Hillbillies and Dogpatch USA, the exhibit traces how Arkansas became both a source of fascination and a national punchline. Visitors will discover how early writers and humorists popularized the pronunciation “Arkansaw,” helping cement an enduring image of the state as isolated, lawless, rural, and untamed.
At the same time, Arkansaw, Arkansas: A State and Its Reputation challenges visitors to consider the difference between perception and reality. While stereotypes often painted Arkansas as backwards or disconnected from progress, the exhibit highlights the complexity of the state’s cultural identity and the many ways Arkansans have shaped—and reshaped—the story of their home.
Featuring artifacts, imagery, music, and interpretive materials, the exhibit offers an engaging and thought-provoking look at how reputation is created, sustained, and sometimes overcome. It also provides visitors with an opportunity to reflect on the role popular culture plays in defining regions and communities far beyond their borders.
To further enrich the experience, the Fort Smith Museum of History will complement the traveling exhibit with original artifacts and materials from its own collections, creating deeper connections between the exhibit’s themes and Arkansas’s lived history. These accompanying pieces will provide visitors with an added layer of regional context and authentic historical perspective drawn directly from the museum’s archives and holdings.
Presented during the nation’s semiquincentennial observance, the exhibit is part of Fort Smith Museum of History’s broader effort to explore the people, places, culture, and stories that have shaped Arkansas and the American experience over the past 250 years.
