Spend a weekend surrounded by Son Jarocho, the beautiful traditional folk music, song, and dance of Veracruz Mexico!
The Ariles Son Jarocho camp will gather master Son Jarocho musicians and dancers from Mexico and the United States to teach, perform, and engage in conversation with Son Jarocho practitioners of all skill levels and backgrounds. Hosted by the Ashokan Center in partnership with Son Jarocho NY, we are thrilled to welcome you all to this amazing location with other Son Jarocho enthusiasts!
What is Son Jarocho? Musical influences of the African Diaspora, Romani communities, and Arab populations were brought into the Americas from Spain during the colonial period. These styles combined with Mexican indigenous musical traditions giving birth to Son Jarocho in the early 17th century. For three hundred years, Son Jarocho was performed in fandango (community gatherings) settings in the rural communities of Veracruz, but began disappearing as younger generations moved cities within Mexico and the United States. For the past three decades, Son Jarocho has experienced a rebirth and is practiced throughout Mexico, the US, Canada, South America, Western Europe, Scandinavia, and Japan via professional performances and fandangos.
