About this Event

📚Lecture: "Are You Addicted to Your Phone?"
🎤Speaker: Dr. Kim Hellemans (Associate Dean of Science, Carleton University)

How many times did you check your phone today? Why is it so easy to lose an hour scrolling reels? We spend hours every day swiping, tapping, and refreshing but is that just modern life, or are our phones actually hijacking our brains?

Join neuroscientist Dr. Kim Hellemans for a lively, myth-busting tour through the science of social media, dopamine, stress, habits, and why some of us can't resist "just one more scroll." You'll leave with a better understanding of how your brain works, a few laughs, and practical ways to build healthier habits (no dopamine detox required.)

Dr. Kim Hellemans is a neuroscientist and Assistant Professor at Carleton University, where she studies how stress, trauma, and cannabis use intersect to shape mental health in young adults. Her work bridges biology and lived experience, combining biomarkers, behavioural research, and community-engaged approaches to better understand substance use and reduce stigma. She also hosts a podcast (Minding the Brain) to make neuroscience accessible and relevant. In her talks, she aims to translate complex science into engaging, relatable stories that spark curiosity and conversation.
