About this Event
This half-day workshop, taking place in Liverpool Central Library, brings together heritage professionals, academics, artists and members of the public to explore interconnected histories of medicine, slavery and colonialism. Hosted at Liverpool Record Office, it focuses on a range of archival materials – including a register of surgeons who practised medicine aboard slaving ships. In doing so, the workshop interrogates Liverpool’s role in formulating and disseminating racist medical knowledges and practices.
The workshop features keynote presentations by Dr Khalil West (Independent Scholar) and Jioni Warner (Curator at Thackray Museum of Medicine, Leeds). It builds upon a November 2025 workshop ‘Working with traumatic histories: how can Liverpool’s heritage institutions represent histories and legacies of “scientific” racism?’
The workshop is supported by the National Museums Liverpool/University of Liverpool collaboration fund.
