A “technicolor” programme from the National Library of Scotland’s film collections. Part of the Dementia Fest - WestFest 2026
About this Event

Three light-hearted films from the 1950s to 1970s showcase the homes, holiday destinations and design of mid-century Scotland in all its colourful glory.


The screening is free and run on a drop-in basis.


The programme lasts around 45 minutes. It will screen at 2:30pm, 3:30pm and 4:30pm.


About the films:

  • ‘New Day’ (1959) - (22 mins) An optimistic portrait of the new town of Glenrothes. Coal miner, George Mackay, and family settle into their new modern home and community.


  • ‘Pleasure Island’ (1960) - (10 mins) A sunny picture-postcard promotional film for holidaymakers to ‘Royal Rothesay’, Isle of Bute.


  • ‘Everything by Design’ (1971) (15 mins) - Modern design is explored in this colourful survey of Scottish homes, furniture, shops and transportation.
