Architecture Highlights Behind-the-Scenes Tour
Led by local architects and individuals directly involved in the creation of the building, this approximately 90-minute guided tour traces the Museum’s architectural story from the ground up.
Designed by Randall Stout and inspired by the natural forms of Virginia’s landscape, the building’s soaring glass, steel, patinated zinc, and locally sourced Hokie Stone come alive through expert insight and little-known details.
Along the way, guests will explore dramatic interior spaces, flexible performance and gallery areas, the “Vault” where artworks not on view are stored, and the sophisticated systems that protect the Museum’s art while welcoming the community.
The tour culminates at the Top of the Taubman Balcony, where sweeping views of downtown Roanoke, the railroad corridor, and surrounding landmarks provide a fitting finale. Guests are invited to raise a glass during a celebratory champagne toast to cap off this special experience.
Whether you’re a design enthusiast, architecture professional, or curious local, this special tour offers rare access, compelling stories, and a memorable way to experience the Taubman Museum of Art.
