Architecture Ambles: South Third Avenue Neighborhood
Advertisement
Take a walk through the South Third Avenue neighborhood with us on Thursday, July 30 and discover the architectural styles and hidden history, and maybe reminisce a bit with us. We will start the tour at Riverside Park (upper parking lot) at 6 pm.
Hometown diners and taverns, the local pool, small shops and groceries, small houses and large, and industry have lined these streets since the late 1800s. A true neighborhood with all that was needed by its residents. Some names you’ll know, others are mostly lost in time.
For many, Bill’s Fine Foods brings to mind a little fish pond out front, trophy muskies on the walls, The Rainbow Room, and great comfort foods. But what was there before Bill’s, and what has been there since then?
The neighborhood grocery is an anchor, and in this neighborhood it’s been Kohlman’s and Lee’s Grocery since the 1950s. And we can’t forget Pope’s Hobbyland for all your hobbies - from cake decorating to model railroad supplies. If you had a pet, Roe’s was just across the street from Pope’s.
And when it was hot, neighbors could cool off at Riverside Park pool or perhaps have a beer at one of several local taverns.
Architecture Ambles are open to all, and no reservations are required. Tours may include uneven ground; comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Please watch the Friends of Wausau Historic Landmarks Facebook page and website, www.wausauhistoriclandmarks.org, for any updates due to weather.
Contact Christine at [email protected] or 715-212-9922 with any questions about the tour.
