Abstract

Who really made architecture in the sixteenth century? Architectural history has traditionally prioritised the famous lead architect, obscuring the labor of those working alongside him. However, there are many preserved anonymous drawings that reveal the group nature of architectural design. This talk will investigate several sheets produced by unknown or little-known architects who worked in the circle of Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, but also other architects like Michelangelo, demonstrating the complex networks of practice and exchange amongst practitioners of architecture in the period. Read together, such drawings testify to the complex professional reality of the unheralded working architect.

About Cara Rachele

Cara Rachele is the Doctoral Program Leader for the Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture (gta) and Senior Lecturer (Oberassistentin) at ETH Zurich. Her research interests include architectural drawings, collection history, and narratives of architectural failure. Her forthcoming monograph is on drawing and the development of architectural disegno.
