Join us for a special talk titled "From Herty Cups to Shell Middens: How HMS Florida Scouts are Protecting the Panhandle's Past" with Mike Thomin, FPAN staff and Senior Research Associate with the University of West Florida.
The talk is about Heritage Monitoring Scouts (HMS) Florida, a public engagement program that trains volunteers to monitor and document changes to cultural sites at risk, particularly those threatened by climate change impacts such as erosion and sea level rise. In this talk, Mike highlights monitoring efforts across the Florida Panhandle that he was involved with, from the shores of Gulf Islands National Seashore to the marshes of the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve. Through examples ranging from historic turpentine industry sites marked by Herty cups to ancient shell middens along the Gulf Coast, this presentation demonstrates how community-based site monitoring is helping archaeologists track site conditions, document change over time, and contribute valuable information for the long-term preservation of Florida’s cultural heritage.
"Archaeology on Tap" is free and open to the community, but is recommended for adults. Seating is unreserved. The talk starts at 6:30 pm CT and guests are recommended to arrive by 6:00 pm to place drink orders and claim a seat before the talk begins.
