Aquaponic research tour & financial analysis workshop
About this Event
Tour the aquaponic research greenhouse to see the latest results of our crop and fish variety trials. Then bring your laptop for a hands-on workshop on aquaponic farm financial analysis.
When: Thursday, June 25, from 10am to 1pm
Where: Research Greenhouse Complex, University of Maryland, College Park, MD
What:
- 10 to 11:30am: Tour the aquaponic research greenhouse and see preliminary results of our experiment growing a variety of crops and fish species.
- 11:30am to 1:00pm: Hands-on workshop on how to calculate financial analysis spreadsheets for your farm, to help you assess the profitability of an aquaponic enterprise. Bring your laptop!
Why: Aquaponics, which combines hydroponics (plants grown in water) and aquaculture (fish grown in tanks) in a recirculating system is an efficient way to recirculate water and reuse nutrients, reducing off-farm inputs and environmental impacts of food production. Aquaponic growing methods require additional management skills to carefully balance the two systems, compared with hydroponics or aquaculture alone. This workshop is part of a project intended to equip farmers with the skills needed to add aquaponic production methods to their farms, and to assess higher value specialty crops which might make this farming method more financially competitive.
