The Stuart family have been identified with the Cable Bay area for the past 100 years. Prior to that Ian’s great grandparents were the 4th pioneers in the Pelorus Sound where they are buried at Te Towaka. David Stuart sold that property around 1920, eventually purchasing Pepin Island and the Cable Station site in 1930. Youngest son Fred took over the 200-acre Cable Station site after his return from WW2 and marriage to Tess Andrews. The couple eventually added to the property when Ngati Tama land came on the market in 1956 and the Cain Estate 1966.
It was Ian’s mother, Tess who became the first keeper of the history of the Cable Station. Ian and Barbara became involved in the family business on their marriage in 1975 and have carried on the tradition.
About the speakers: Ian has lived at Cable Bay his entire life except for a few years while attending Lincoln and working in Canterbury where he found Barbara Allan. Barbara came from the Lyttelton harbour area where her family arrived on the 5th ship from England in 1855 settling at Allandale at the head of the Harbour.
$2 entry, all welcome
This is a Tuku Festival event.
