Have you ever wondered what’s happening on Hog Mountain Road in Watkinsville? As you ride by, you can see unusual plants, shrubs, flowers and fruits. Ryan McNeill, superintendent of the UGA Durham Horticulture Research Farm, will discuss the behind-the-scenes research that takes place there.McNeill grew up in Lithonia, Georgia, and first came to Athens as a biochemistry major at UGA in 1992. He was the first curator of the Heritage Garden, which opened in early 2000.
Beginning in 2005, he has served as the superintendent of the Durham Horticulture Research Farm in Watkinsville.
McNeill has a master of science in horticulture and is currently a PhD candidate working on improving the somatic embryogenesis of American chestnuts. He lives on-site at the Durham farm with his wife, Carri, and their daughter Molly. He is active in the Georgia chapter of the American Chestnut Foundation as well as Keep Oconee County Beautiful.
The registration deadline is noon on March 28.
