Our April choice is a historical crime novel set in the aftermath of the Great Fire of London in 1666. As the city smoulders, James Marwood a cautious clerk and reluctant government informer witnesses the destruction of St Paul’s Cathedral. When a mutilated body is discovered in the cathedral’s ashes, Marwood is ordered to investigate. His search draws him into a dangerous web of political intrigue, religious extremism, and personal vendettas, and brings him into uneasy alliance with the resourceful and determined Catherine Lovett.
