Course Objectives
The objectives of this course are to enhance your practice as a forensic examiner through expert guidance from leaders in the field. To strengthen documentation skills for legal accuracy and to improve trauma-informed communication with survivors to provide a compassionate and patient centered experience.
Course Facilitators
LORRAINE GIORDANO, MD
Dr. Lorraine Giordano is the Medical Director of CVTC’s SAFE Training Institute. She spent her entire clinical career as an Emergency Medicine physician, most recently at the Mount Sinai Health system. In 1997, Dr. Giordano co-founded, with CVTC, the first Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner program in New York City at the former St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital and Beth Israel Medical Center and was its Medical Director for many years. The standards and protocols of the program she developed have been replicated statewide, nationally and internationally. She developed the first SAFE training for Emergency Medicine residents in New York State over 20 years ago and is well known as an educator in the field of medical and forensic care of sexual assault patients, having lectured widely on the topic to medical, advocacy, criminal justice, and forensics specialists. Dr. Giordano has been active throughout her career in city and state-wide initiatives relating to quality of care of sexual assault patients. She served on New York State’s Department of Health committees to design best practices for care of sexual assault patients, and to develop standards for hospitals applying for status as SAFE Centers of Excellence. She is an experienced expert witness in criminal and civil cases relating to sexual assault. Dr. Giordano has been a mentor and colleague to many professionals in New York City who are committed to the compassionate care of survivors of sexual assault.
JORDAN FOSTER, MD
Dr. Jordan Foster is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Columbia University Medical Center. Dr. Foster graduated from Columbia University in 1989, and then from the SUNY Brooklyn Medical School Magna Cum Laude in 1994. He did his internship in Internal Medicine at Columbia Medical Center, and his residency in Emergency Medicine at Jacobi/Montefiore Hospitals in the Bronx where he was chief resident in 1998. In 2001, he completed a 2 year research fellowship and earned an MSc degree in Clinical Epidemiology and Health Services Research at Cornell Graduate School. From 2004 to 2015, Dr. Foster was the Site Director of the Adult Emergency Department at Columbia University Medical Center. Other positions during this time included the Interim Medical Director of the NYP UrgiCare Center from 2011-2012 and the Medical Director of the Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner (SAFE) Program at NYP since 2007.
