The Unicoi County Chamber of Commerce is inviting residents and visitors to be part of an exciting new chapter in downtown Erwin with the official opening of the Apples on Main project. The ceremony will take place on Friday, April 17 at 4:00 p.m. at Gathering Place Park in historic downtown Erwin.
Apples on Main is a permanent public art initiative designed to celebrate the heritage, creativity, and tourism assets that define Unicoi County. The project features a series of artist-designed apple sculptures installed along Main Avenue, creating a walkable experience that showcases the community’s natural beauty, outdoor recreation opportunities, rich history, and vibrant spirit.
Each apple has been uniquely painted by a different artist and represents a specific tourism asset within the county. Together, the collection forms a visual narrative of the people, places, and experiences that make Unicoi County a destination worth exploring. The project serves not only as an artistic enhancement to downtown but also as a way to tell the county’s story in an engaging and accessible way.
The opening ceremony will celebrate the completion of this placemaking effort and recognize the artists, partners, and community members who contributed to bringing the project to life. The initiative was developed with several goals in mind: increasing foot traffic in downtown Erwin, adding vibrant public art to the landscape, raising awareness of local tourism assets, and encouraging healthy, active lifestyles through walking and exploration.
Each sculpture will also feature a QR code, allowing visitors to connect directly to the Apples on Main website. There, users can learn more about the tourism asset represented by each piece and find additional information to help plan their visit and future adventures in Unicoi County.
Funding for the project was made possible through a grant from the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development, along with additional support from the Tennessee Department of Health. These investments highlight a shared commitment to strengthening community vibrancy, supporting tourism, and promoting wellness through innovative placemaking.
Following the ceremony, attendees are invited to enjoy an open house hosted by the Chamber of Commerce, complete with refreshments. Guests are encouraged to arrive early to explore downtown and stay afterward to experience the Apples on Main installations firsthand.
