This is a 12-mile walk starting from Appledore, that takes in the flatlands of the Romney Marsh, to visit the iconic church at Fairfield.Setting off along the Saxon Shore Way, we pass the Ferry Inn, en route to Stone in Oxney, before a short section of the Royal Military Canal, that we leave on reaching Stone Bridge. After crossing the Marshlink railway line, our route reaches Becket Barn Farm, before we head over to the tiny St Thomas Becket 12th century church, that sits isolated in a field cut through with dykes and grazed by sheep.
In the olden days, the church that inspires artists, photographers and writers, could only be reached by boat, the surrounding fields do flood during heavy rain, but the church remains above the water level. It has been used in many TV dramas and films, one such one in 2011, was BBC adaptation of Great Expectations starring Ray Winstone.
We will have our picnic lunch at the church, before we head northwards to reach the Red Lion at Snargate, where we will enjoy a pub stop for drinks. We then head across open countryside & farmland, to join the Royal Military Canal, which is our companion for the remainder of the walk back to Appledore.

Starting point - Meet at car park in Court Lodge Road, which is off The Street the road is opposite the Black Lion. There are toilets located in the nearby Recreation Ground.
