During this fun and educational workshop, you will learn all about apple grafting!Whether you're a beginner or have some experience, this workshop is perfect for anyone interested in learning the techniques used to propagate fruit trees.
Apples are cultivated primarily through a process called grafting. This process assures trees grow fruit that is true to type. Every Granny Smith looks and tastes like a Granny Smith. This is true for all your other favorites as well.
In this personal hands-on workshop, you will learn how grafting is done and have an opportunity to graft two apple trees of your own which you can plant in ground in the Spring!
Class size is limited to 6 adults per session.
In the workshop you will learn about:
· grafting and why it is important
· rootstocks and how to select the best ones to meet your needs
· scions and how to collect them
· bench grafting a scion to a rootstock
· caring for your newly grafted trees
Grafters will be required to sign a waiver prior to participating in the program.
Geneva rootstock and apple scionwood will be provided at the workshop. If you have a scion (an 8-10inch piece of one year old fruit wood) from a special tree, you can bring it to graft onto one of your rootstocks during the workshop. Grafting allows you to preserve an exceptional heritage tree for future generations.
There are literally thousands of varieties of apples in existence. With grafting, you can enjoy this diversity of nature in your own backyard. Whether you love eating apples, cider apples or pie apples, it’s time to learn a lifelong skill that will provide you with years of enjoyment!
The class is open to adults only. Class size is limited to 6 per session.
There will only be two sessions this year, so be sure to sign up early.
Program cost: $65/person
Speaker, Chris Wayne, owner of Bee Forage Farm, grows apples, cherries, peaches, and pears, along with many other fruits. Having been inspired to start a fruit orchard due to a lack of local organic options, Chris now seeks to help others by showcasing what can be done in a small-scale orchard with practices that are focused on improving the environment.
