Residência São João (RSJ) has established itself as a unique project in the realm of artist residencies, focusing on experimental practices and in cohesion with the local rural territory. The residency is situated in the mountains of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at a historic and ecological coffee farm. Since its foundation in 2012, creatives and farmers were attracted to its land, where nowadays about 20 people live. Year-round, artists come from all over the world for immersions at the residency. RSJ fosters the influence of nature and agroecology in the creative processes of artists-in-residence, thus subtly infiltrating the money, power and city-centered production of contemporary culture.
