Anticolonial High Tea

Join Broken China (Tao Leigh Goffe & Cecile Chong) for an artist talk in conversation with curator Dominique Jean-Louis as part of the exhibition Dear Mrs. Washington. Opening in the lead-up to the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States and the Battle of Brooklyn, the exhibition reconsiders the material culture of the early republic through the intimate and often violent histories embedded in porcelain, teeth, tea, and sugar.

Following the talk, guests are invited to participate in a tea gathering inspired by 18th-century tea culture and the social rituals associated with Martha Washington’s table. The program will include tastings of George Washington’s favorite hoecakes and sweets, herbal teas grown at the Old Stone House garden, and a sample of Madeira wine, a drink widely consumed in early American households.
By bringing together conversation, food, and historical reflection within the Old Stone House, the evening invites visitors to consider how everyday domestic objects, china, tea, sugar, and the table itself, were entangled with the global systems of extraction, trade, and empire that shaped the early United States.
