Marion Crane (Janet Leigh), a secretary yearning for a more fulfilling life, impulsively decides to steal 40,000 dollars and makes a stop at the Bates Motel where she meets a sweet and lonely motel owner by the name of Norman Bates.

Dennis (Perkins), a youngish man recently released from a mental hospital, gets a factory job in a small town and takes an immediate shine to a high school majorette Sue Ann (Tuesday Weld). Sue Ann is intrigued by Dennis, especially when he confides in her that he's on a very important, top secret mission for the government and he needs her help.
