Liberation theologies have long called the church to recognise prophetic voices that have gone unheard. In churches that have mirrored the world’s ableism, disabled people have been seen as recipients of care, rather than as leaders whose gifts could renew the church from the edge. Drawing on stories from research with disabled Christians, in solidarity with other marginalised groups, Naomi Jacobs will ask how the church could be transformed if it responded to the leadership of those calling for justice from the margins.
Dr Naomi Lawson Jacobs (they/them) is a Research Associate at Manchester Metropolitan University and co-author of At the Gates: Disability, Justice and the Churches (Darton, Longman and Todd, 2022). Naomi is a member of the Church of England's Neurodiversity Working Group. They are currently researching disabled people's leadership in faith communities with Dr Erin Raffety (Princeton Theological Seminary), funded by the Calvin Institute for Christian Worship.
