Meet the Musicians
Clara Outten has been turning the pages on Troy’s sheet music—and singing right alongside him—since they were both in high school. Clara grew up in a family that loves to sing, and she carried that joy with her through Pocomoke High School and Salisbury University. A fourth‑generation public school teacher, she now teaches at Snow Hill Elementary and mentors college students preparing to enter the classroom. She’s also the proud momma of Zachary and Nora, who are following right along in the family’s musical footsteps.
Troy Outten is also a graduate of Pocomoke High School and Salisbury University, where he earned his degree in music. He grew up helping in the family furniture store, but everything changed when he picked up a guitar in high school. Today, he’s the longtime band director at Chincoteague High School, known for stepping in on just about any instrument when his students need an extra musician. Troy has performed everywhere from weddings to family Christmas parties, and he keeps the entire Outten musical clan well‑rehearsed and performance‑ready.
John Heinz is a self‑taught fiddle and dobro player who works at NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility. He performs with several Eastern Shore groups, including The Salts for Chincoteague’s Road Scholars programs, the high‑energy Free State Country Band from Maryland, Brian and the Barn Owls out of Delaware, and Backroad with Troy and Clara Outten—plus a handful of other acts. Originally from New Jersey, John now lives in Captain’s Cove, VA. Music runs deep in his roots: his parents were world‑famous opera stars, Jerome Hines and Lucia Evangelista.
