Dann Woellert is a Food Etymologist and his presentation will take you through the history of Cincinnati Wine. You will learn about five native American grapes that were used by Cincinnati Wine makers before the Civil War. You will also meet the wine barons like Nicholas Longworth, Johann Meier , and Michael Werk, and their contributions to the larger American Wine industry that allows us to drink our jammy California Cabs.
Dann Woellert studies old recipes and menus to get to the root of why we eat what we eat. He’s written eight books about local food and been on five episodes of History Channel’s Season four of Food that Built America.
He’s eaten back in time by tracing dishes in the areas of his family origins. He’s tasted gruetzwurst, the ancestor of goetta in Lower Saxony. He’s eaten fermented barley soup in Poland. He’s had fish pie in England and pickled herring and in Mecklenburg Germany. He’s had xxx cheese and Spatburgunder wine in Baden. He’s harvested and made Norton wine that was more like wine vinegar.
