Annual Juneteenth Celebration at Freedom Park
Juneteenth commemorates June 19th, 1865 when the Union Army arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas and announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state were now free by executive decree. This was 2 1/2 years after The Emancipation Proclamation ended slavery on January 1, 1863.
