About this Event
Qween Jean — Haitian storyteller, human rights activist, and celebrated costume designer — receives the 10th annual José Muñoz Award and joins in conversation about her work and life. Jean designed the feline fashion for Cats: The Jellicle Ball (opening on Broadway in spring 2026), for which she received an Obie Award and other honors. Projects she has created designs for include Liberation (Broadway), Oh Happy Day, Saturday Church, Swamp Dwellers, Wedding Band, Macbeth in Stride, Walden and Donja R. Love’s new film Home. Jean founded Black Trans Liberation, an organization that provides fellowship, food, groceries, and housing resources for the transgender and gender nonconforming community. She is the co-author of Revolution is Love: A Year of Black Trans Liberation, a visual and narrative celebration an activist movement. Given by CLAGS: The Center for LGBTQ Studies, this award honors an LGBTQ community leader. It is named for the late José Esteban Muñoz, whose work grappled with issues of race, gender, and sexuality.
