Presentation Title: How to Identify Autism in your eating disorder patients and what to do next

Presentation Description: According to the CDC 1 in 36 children is diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Approximately 1 in 5 eating disorder patients is on the autism spectrum. Despite its prevalence, this is an important part of the diagnostic picture that is often missed. Clinicians regularly report that they did not receive adequate education and training when it comes to diagnosing and treating autistic individuals. This presentation will help increase your confidence in recognizing signs and symptoms that suggest an autism spectrum diagnosis, what steps to take next when you recognize a possible Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis, as well as possible ways to adapt your approach.

Objectives:

1. Recognize signs and symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder2. Identify Comorbidities and associated features in Autistic patients3. Increase confidence in your ability to discuss a potential diagnosis with your patients and other treatment providers

4. Identify specific ways you can tailor your approach with your patients on the Autism Spectrum

Bio: Dr. Kristina Kise is a board-certified Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist. She graduated from the University of Florida Medical School, and completed her internship in Psychiatry at Brown University, residency in Adult Psychiatry at University of Florida, and fellowship in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry at University of Florida where she also served as chief fellow. She also serves as adjunct faculty at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine teaching the first year medical students. Dr. Kise has a special interest in eating disorders and previously worked in a residential treatment center for the treatment of Eating Disorders. She is an active member of and serves on the leadership team for IAEDP (International Association for Eating Disorders Professionals). Dr. Kise also specializes in treating Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorders. She is trained in and utilizes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for anxiety disorders and Exposure & Response Prevention (ERP) for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). She has developed a passion for educating treatment providers and the community on Autism Spectrum Disorder, in particular girls and women on the spectrum who for many years have been under-diagnosed or misdiagnosed. Seeing many girls and their parents experience relief and understanding when they finally receive the diagnosis, and helping to decrease the stigma and embrace a neurodiversity affirming approach has been a rewarding part of her career.
