Debut author Anne Evans will discuss her novel, "The Light Through the Branches", in conversations with fellow author Angela Pneuman at Readers' Books on Wednesday, January 8th, with a 5:30 reception followed by a 6:00 reading. "The Light Through the Branches" is a deeply affecting novel about the troubled mother-daughter relationship, told through two compelling timelines: one centered on a challenging shared road trip, and the other taking us further into the past, where we bear witness to an abusive family history that Elizabeth would sooner ignore. When a stepfather assaults two young girls while their mother turns a blind eye, what are the consequences for a childhood, an adulthood, and, ultimately, the relationship between mother and daughter? As Kate attends to Elizabeth's dementia-fraught last days and traces her fraught family history, she must ask herself if it is possible to reconcile love with resentment and anger with pity?
Ms. Evans will discuss her novel with fellow author Angela Pneuman. Ms. Pneuman is the Executive Director of the Napa Valley Writers' Conference and the author of a book of short stories, "Home Remedies", and a novel, "Lay It on My Heart".
Anne Matlack Evans, a professor of English and creative writing at Napa Valley College, is also the Director Emeritus of the Napa Valley Writers' Conference. She has published fiction in The Bennington Review, Eclipse and Memoir, as well as nonfiction in The Ruminator Review and the San Francisco Chronicle. She received an M.A. in Comparative Literature from U.C. Berkeley, an M.F.A. in fiction from the Bennington Writing Seminars, and a fellowship from the Vermont Studio Center. She lives in Napa, California where she teaches comparative literature and writing and enjoys playing the piano and walking her unruly Portuguese Water Dog.
