Draw inspiration from Anne Dangar (1885–1951), one of Australia’s most important modern artists, in this two-day ceramic workshop led by artists Maricelle Olivier and Joey Burns.
Exploring Dangar’s techniques and philosophies, participants will learn the basics of wheel-thrown pottery and surface decoration techniques, and gain a deeper appreciation for Dangar’s bold, Cubist designs.
Before the workshop, participants are invited to join exhibition curator, Rebecca Edwards and workshop tutors, Maricelle Olivier and Joey Burns for an exhibition tour focused on the ideas, materials and techniques in Dangar’s pottery.
The two-day workshop will begin with an introduction on how to wheel-throw cups and bowls, before focusing on the Dangar’s surface decoration techniques using templates and glazes. Participants will have the opportunity to develop their own decorative designs inspired by Dangar’s ideas and transfer them to a pre-prepared wheel-thrown plate.
The workshop is suitable for participants 16 years and over. No previous pottery experience is required. Registration includes all workshop materials and firing of works produced during the workshop.
Anne Dangar is on display at the National Gallery from 7 Dec 2024 – 27 Apr 2025.
