16mm film strips.
About this Event
In this two-part workshop, we will be learning how to create animation by directly manipulating
16mm film strips, running them through a vintage projector, and collectively creating an
experimental animated film.
“Direct animation” is the process of painting, drawing, and scratching on film to create the
illusion of animated movement. Making images directly on 16mm film offers a unique challenge:
the small work area (smaller than a postage stamp!) for each frame encourages participants to
explore more abstracted forms of mark-making, movement, color, and musicality within the
image. Artists like Len Lye, Norman McLaren, Stan Brakhage, and Rose Bond have used direct
animation to create vibrant, energetic, and delightfully experimental films.
During the first session, we will begin the workshop with a screening and introduction to direct
animation, how to think about time/timing when creating animation, and a
discussion/demonstration of mark-making techniques. Then participants will create their own
sections of film using clear 16mm film leader (film and drawing materials provided).
In the second session, we will be splicing the films together and running them through a vintage
16mm projector to watch the film appear! The rest of the time will be dedicated to continuing to
work/experiment with the medium.
The film will be scanned and distributed digitally to participants. Once the film has been
processed, participants are welcome to come pick up their film section at The Print Factory.
