Anglican Spirituality Retreat:
Retrieving, Reclaiming, Being Revitalized in, Christian Catholicity
Grace Muskogee
Saturday, Feb. 7, 2026
9:30 to 4:00
Anglican Christianity, in the English Reformation and the Oxford Movement, did not need to recover from 19th Century liberal Protestantism, because it already had continued in ancient catholic and apostolic Christianity, much different from Karl Barth’s “neo-orthodoxy” and “biblical theology.”
A First Retreat, “Evelyn Underhill and The Holy Spirit”
I. Hearing Each Other’s Stories And How we Have Come to Value Anglican Christianity
II. “Evelyn Underhill and the Holy Spirit.” -- Clyde Glandon
--"The enrichment of the sense of God is surely the crying need of our current Christianity.”
--“Is not guiding souls to God the object of the pastoral life?”
--"As Christians, we are committed, are we not? to a belief in the priority of the supernatural world; the actual presence, and working within visible appearances, of the Creative Spirit of God.”
--Underhill draws upon the doctrine of the Holy Spirit for a catholic correction of the Protestant doctrine of dispensationalism and the sola scriptura tenets of Barthians
--"Love and prayer are tremendous powers, able to transform in a literal sense human personality and make it more and more that which it is meant to be—the agent of the Holy Spirit in the world.”
--"The priest is, or should be, an agent of the supernatural.
“Evelyn Underhill became a leading exponent of Anglican spirituality.”
~A.M. Allchin, “Evelyn Underhill and Anglican Spirituality,” 1996.
Our spiritual tradition is itself like a sacrament.
