About this Event
According to the Government of Canada, 44% of Canadian women – that’s 6.2 million people – have experienced some kind of abuse in an intimate partner relationship.
And every six days, a woman in Canada is murdered by her intimate partner.
Salt Spring Island is hardly immune from this crisis. And Angela Marie MacDougall is the best person to lead us in an informative, empathetic, solutions-oriented discussion.
The Executive Director of Vancouver’s Battered Women Support Services has been an activist, frontline worker and advocate for 30 years.
Angela Marie MacDougall has made it her mission to end gender-based violence, through increasing awareness, promoting equality for all women, and improving services and support for victims of violence.
She is a leader in the development of empowerment and advocacy-based service delivery models that are grounded in strong theoretical frameworks and intersectionality—connecting feminism and women’s leadership to address violence, substance use, and mental health.
Angela Marie MacDougall’s work also addresses the social inequities and environmental problems associated with colonialization and the generalized criminalization of communities of colour. Her parents met in the Black community known as Hogan’s Alley, which had strong connections to Salt Spring Island.
Angela Marie MacDougall has been recognised for her work by being named “A Remarkable Woman” by the City of Vancouver and one of Vancouver’s most powerful people by Vancouver Magazine.
Alicia Herbert, the Executive Director of Islanders Working Against Violence, will moderate this important event. Please join us!
