WEEKLY SCHEDULE:
WEEK 1 - 27th October - Paint Handling and Colour Mixing
In this class we will recap (or start learning!)how to achieve different saturation levels and tones using watercolour, and then experiment with various ways of combining paint colours to create the colour mixes we want on the paper. We will also practice using warm and cool colour palettes in some small landscape studies.
WEEK 2 - 3rd November- Looking at Light!- STILL LIFE
In this class we will be working from still life objects (natural objects, fruits and vegetables) in the studio to learn how to accurately represent the direction of light in your paintings. We will look at how to capture the effects of bright light and how to paint shadows.
WEEK 3 - 10th November- Using an underwash layer- CITYSCAPE
In this session we will experiment with laying down a first wash layer over a pencil drawing of an Edinburgh city scene, then building up colour and tone on top of this layer. (We will work from photo references in this class)
WEEK 4 - 17th November- Lost and Found Edges - ANIMALS and BIRDS
We will practice how to use broken edges and muted colours to create “lost and found” edges (i.e.”hard” or “soft” edges) in our watercolour paintings to add visual interest, and contrast this with using more defined edges in some areas. We will work from photo references of animals or birds.
WEEK 5 - 24th November- Botanical Drawing Techniques
This week we will practice detailed pencil drawing and applying accurate colour washes to create realistic representations of plants and flowers (from real life specimens in the studio).
WEEK 6 - 1st December- Ink and Wash Christmas Cards!
In this final class we will create three or four (depends how fast you work!) lovely hand drawn Christmas cards using dip pens, black ink and watercolour, for sending to family and friends. Designs will be available to copy or you can choose to create your own design(s). As this is the last class before Christmas everyone is also welcome to bring along any alcoholic (or non alcoholic) drinks to celebrate together - I will bring glasses and some Christmas snacks!
