Renowned garden historian Elaine Taylor is among our regular visitors. Her in-depth profiles of prominent gardens in the north-west are always fascinating and informative.
This time around, Elaine takes us on a pictorial trip to nearby Leyland. Here in the home of the Farington family for over 600 years we find that successive generations of the family have created fashionable gardens to suit the centuries.
The most flamboyant creations came in the Victorian era, when the family directed the renowned William A. Nesfield to create a shell-shaped maze and a colourful parterre. The maze continues to delight visitors and the parterre, maintained by South Ribble Parks Dept, is planted in bright and attractive colours. The walled garden is still productive, boasting a fig tree and a vine. There is also an ice-house to be visited.
