So what's "Wait with Me" about?
The main character is Jade, a 24-year-old millennial living in Toronto who is struggling to pay rent and find work while dealing with a dysfunctional family and a sick parent. When Jade starts feeling sick, she is not sure if it is a mental or physical issue and is encouraged by her best friend to seek help. Jade tries to get help from three different Emergency Departments three nights in a row and is dismissed. Her mental health continues to deteriorate, and she attempts suicide on the third day, but still is not taken seriously at the hospital. After her failed suicide attempt, Jade slowly recovers in the community with the help of friends and a psychiatrist. However, she must still contend with difficulties navigating the psychiatric system, societal stigma, and friends giving up on her.

What readers are saying:
“Authentic storytelling combined with a thoughtful critique of the broken Canadian health care system makes this novel a significant contribution to the dialogue on mental health.”
Lisa Anita Wegner, Artistic Director at Haus of Dada
"I literally could not have stopped reading this even if I tried; the way Emily writes keeps you guessing, and needing to know what happens next. Though not for the faint of heart, Wait With Me is worth it to show you what it takes to come back from the harsh yellow line that delineates life and death, in a way that keeps you breathless."
