THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH (England, 1934) – Thursday, May 7, D100, 7:00pm
An early piece of pure candy from the Master of Suspense. Part screwball comedy, part thriller, this original version of The Man Who Knew Too Much (it was remade in the 1950s with James Stewart and Doris Day) depicts a witty, flirtatious married couple, on vacation for Mom’s skeet shooting competition (!), having their daughter kidnapped to keep them quiet after learning of an assassination plot, due to take place at a classical music concert back in London! The NY Times called it the “raciest melodrama of the new year”, with special praise going to the creepy Peter Lorre, in an early English-speaking role.
